The Ingredients Challenge: How Ferndale Keeps It All Moving
Making great confectionery isn’t just about the recipe—it’s about managing the ingredients. And that’s no small feat. As Ferndale Foods Australia has grown, so has the complexity of our supply chain. More ingredients. More suppliers. More logistics. More challenges.
Where do we store it all?
How do we organise it?
How do we maintain quality?
These aren’t just theoretical questions. They’re real, daily challenges that demand precision, planning, and investment.
From Four to 141 – The Scale of Growth
When we first started, we were working with just four ingredients. Simple. Straightforward. Manageable.
Now, we manage 141 ingredients across three different sites—each with its own sourcing challenges, handling requirements, and quality standards. At our peak, we’ve worked with 169 different ingredients, constantly evolving to develop new products while maintaining consistency in our existing range.
Handling this level of complexity isn’t easy, so we’ve built the infrastructure to do it right.
• Warehousing – Purpose-built storage facilities, including ambient temperature-controlled areas to keep ingredients in peak condition.
• Logistics and Sourcing – A dedicated commercial manager ensures we secure the best ingredients from trusted suppliers, managing the global and local supply chain.
• Quality Assurance – A QA team oversees every stage, ensuring ingredients meet the highest standards before they even reach production.
• Product Development and Food Tech Teams – With each new ingredient comes new opportunities—and new challenges. Our expert teams work tirelessly to ensure that every ingredient works perfectly in our formulations.
“In the early days, Dad and I could handle it ourselves. It wasn't easy, but we managed. But before long, it became more than we could cope with. We simply couldn’t grow without investing in the right skills. So, we invested in people. And those people didn’t just help us keep up—they brought new experience and fresh perspectives that changed the way we operate entirely. They improved efficiency, solved problems we didn’t even realise we had, and ultimately put us in a position to expand as quickly as we have. There’s no question—we couldn’t have done it without them.”
— Leigh Edward, CEO, Ferndale Foods Australia
Making Complexity Work for Us
Growing from four ingredients to 141 wasn’t just a change in scale—it was a transformation in how we operate. Every ingredient matters, and every step in the process needs to be seamless.
That’s why Ferndale Foods Australia continues to invest in the people, processes, and infrastructure that make it all possible. Because when we get the ingredients right, everything else falls into place.
